LANCASTER CANAL

Tickets: Available from us.

Directions: This canal runs from Preston to Stainton but the bit dealt with here is from Tewitfields locks to Stainton. Access can be off the A6070 at Tewitfield and at various side lanes off this road as far as Crooklands. At Crooklands easy access is across the road from the Crooklands Hotel. The Stainton bit is best reached by taking the A65 from Crooklands to Kendal and about 1½ miles past Endmoor the road dips around some tight corners. Turn left here for Stainton and after the village it passes the end of the canal where there is parking.

Species are Common and very large Grass Carp, Tench, Chub, Roach, Perch, Bream, Pike and Gudgeon.

The canal is very shallow and generally very clear because of lack of powered boat traffic so fish very fine for the smaller species but remember to scale up for Tench, Chub and Carp. Grass carp in excess of 20lb were caught in 1999. Float fishing, pole or ledger tactics all work and plenty of cloud ground bait should soon find the fish. An excellent water for the Pike angler to roam using surface plugs or sink and draw tactics with a Sprat or Smelt. Good baits are maggots (if you want some stunning Tench catches try pre-baiting with 3 or 4 pints of maggots mixed with worms and corn and get to the water at dawn. If you get there after about 8.00am in Summer, the Tench will be off the feed and fishing for them will be fairly poor until towards dusk), casters, bread, sweet corn and worms.
