The Menace Varient

Materials required :

  • Wide Gape hooks sizes 12- 16

  • Black 6/0 tying thread

  • Black plastazote (close cell foam)

  • Black cock hackles

  • Black dubbing (seals fur or substitute

Tying  :

Thread the gold bead onto the hook up to behind the eye.

Tie in the thread behind the bead and wind down the hook shank in touching turns to opposite the point. Tie in a bunch of mixed yellow and olive marabou to form the tail.Tie in the fritz and wind the thread up to behind the bead.

Wind the fritz up the hook shank in tight touching turns and tie off behind the head and varnish .

A couple of strands of flashabou or similar can be added to the marabou if desired.

This fly is absolutely deadly all year round and can be fished with equal success on floating, intermediate or sinking lines. We find that fish normally prefer a slowish figure of eight retrieve with plenty of pauses . Sometimes a jerky figure of eight works very well. Takes are generally very confident draws on the line and this particular fly works very well on large over wintered fish that have seen everything and have been caught a few times. Watch out for takes on the drop and also you pick up a lot of fish if you lift and hang the fly at the end of the retrieve rather than just whipping the fly out and recasting.
